I tried the Black Gesso

Evening Everyone,
I had a very productive Sunday, finishing off quite a few bits and pieces including playing with the Distress Oxide and Stencil Resist technique only this time using black gesso.

I brayered black gesso onto a piece of cardstock and let it dry before adding several colours of Distress Oxide ink.

Because the Oxides are a combination of dye and pigment inks they will colour over the top of the black gesso.

It's quite subtle, but at least you can see it which you wouldn't using just the standard distress inks.

As with the cards yesterday I ran the piece of card through an embossing machine with a rubber/silicon mat and a stencil and then removed some of the ink only this time I left the stencil in place while I gently rubbed it with a damp baby wipe.
Because there wasn't a huge contrast in colour I decided to highlight the image using a versamark pad and clear embossing powder. Again I applied the versamark ink with the stencil still in place.

This card uses a variety of diecuts over a lovely gessoed background.

 I think that this is probably one of my favourite cards, if you are allowed favourites that is.

I stamped over the gessoed background in grey ink before running it through the embossing machine on this card.

I added stamped and embossed flowers over the top of the background images having first done a little fussy cutting.

As you know I hate throwing even the tiniest of scraps away so this card was made with some trimmings and a fussy cut flower.

This piece of card did not have gesso on it before the inking so it is mach darker in colour and the stencilled image doesn't show up very well.

I should have added a shim when embossing this piece of card (stencils come in a variety of thicknesses) so I added some gilding wax to highlight the image.

I used a large die cut sentiment,

and some funky foam to add dimension to this card.

Same colours as the previous card, just gessoed card stock so the colours are much more subtle,

and the baby wipe takes away the colour from the raised portions of the embossed background.

And this one is inspired by the colour combo that Michele came up with in class. She is definitely a purple girl and usually only deals with one colour at a time so this is definitely a departure from the norm for her. I also added the gesso after I has embossed the card which gives a different finished result.

I have to say that her background was much paler than this, which I think I probably prefer but I loved the colours that she chose so I just had to give it a try.
I actually got a little fresh air today. My Gym Buddy came and picked me and we went out for a coffee. So nice to see a different set of surrounds. Of course I'm paying for it tonight, but it was well worth it.

Gesso Resist with Distress Oxides and Stencils

Morning All,
We had a fabulous class yesterday playing with Distress Oxides and Stencils.

Once again I found this technique on YouTube , my favourite place when I am sitting on the train visiting my youngest daughter and the Grandkids.

I have often seen people use Gesso on cardstock before they ink it, and to be honest I have never quite seen the point, it just seems like a major phaff.

Now I understand. I decided that I had better try the technique with Gesso, as per the video, and without to see if there was any point in its addition.

As you can see from these first two cards there is a definite difference in colour. Both cards have been made using the same colours. The first with Gesso and the second without.

The technique requires that after you have applied ink to the cardstock you run it through an embossing machine using a stencil and rubber/silicon mat to give you a fabulous textured background.

Once embossed you gently remove ink from the embossed image using a baby wipe.

The gesso on the cardstock acts as a resist allowing you to remove the ink which allows the pattern from the stencil to become more visible.

You need to be fairly gentle with the baby wipe otherwise you wipe away the background ink as well. Top tip from the ladies on the class...….squeeze the baby wipe first to remove some of the moisture.
I am always telling them that I learn something from them at each class and this was one of those things. Along with a fabulous colour combo that I need to try out.

Without the Gesso, the colour of the background is much darker, and the ink is difficult to remove making the stencilled image less visible.

A little gilding wax can help to make the background 'pop'.

Any stamping needs to be done to the background before you run it through the embossing machine.

I added stamped and coloured images or die cuts to finish off my cards.
This is definitely a technique that I will use again, and the bottle of gesso now sits on my desk, not put away with all the other paints that I own.
I wonder what it would look like using black gesso and Distress Oxides? Guess what I will be playing with this afternoon lol.

Woodware Father's Day Gift

Hi All
Another very early scheduled post, as it is my turn to share with you a Father's Day gift for the Woodware challenge.
I decided that I wanted to make something a little bit different, for me at least, and so I made this plaque to hang on my Sin-in-law Jason's shed.

We do tease him about the time that he spends out there. If it was bigger perhaps we could fit in a bed so that he wouldn't need to stop working, but I know that he would rather that it was big enough to fit a whole car in to work on, not just bits of one lol.

I used the Creative Palette again. I'm getting quite addicted to playing with this, only this time I used acrylic paints. I used some extender on the Creative Palette first before I added the Acrylic paints, and then I stamped into it with Bubble wrap and stamps from Stampendous NKCRS02 Wired

I'm no use with step by step photos as I never know where I'm going until I start to play, so I took a photo of some of the equipment that I used instead.

I pulled the print off on to a piece of MDF that I had first painted with Gesso.

Boy, this is so not the usual me, I even impressed myself lol.

The letters are Chippies which I covered with Versamark ink and then Black Frantage Embossing Enamel.
I sealed the background with a mixture of Matte and Glossy accents applied with a paint brush, and this is also what I used to stick the letters on.
I'm not sure that it would stand up to the outside too successfully, but as the door to Jay's shed is shielded by an overhanging roof hopefully it won't be too much of a problem.

 

As you can see I got a bit  carried away again and so I made a card out of the second print that I pulled from the palette, this time using white card.

The paler section is where the original plate was pulled by the MDF, so I stamped and embossed CRQ144 Cling Dad Words into this section and then painted it using dye based ink.
The little mice on the projects are a small in joke since Jay's shed was home to a family of rodents during the winter. I think that he will see the funny side of it lol.

I needed something to pull everything together so I added some large leaves from an old Stampendous clear set SSC022 Fall Foliage.

They were stamped and embossed using Sepia Versafine and clear embossing powder.

As you can see I'm afraid it never gets cleaned. I just add another layer of paint or ink to it the next time I use it!!!
It still seems to work, although I'm sure that Fran from Stampendous would be horrified.
